Strengthening Local Governance through Citizen Participation
The Governance Research Centre (GRC) believes that effective governance begins at the community level. In our recent study, we explored how citizen engagement in local decision-making has improved transparency in service delivery across several districts in Sierra Leone. The research highlighted that communities with active participation in council meetings recorded higher satisfaction in the management of local projects.
We also discovered that when citizens are informed about budget allocations and development priorities, they are more likely to hold authorities accountable. This reduces the gap between government and citizens while promoting trust and cooperation. The study recommends the integration of civic education programs in all community governance frameworks.
Our findings are being used by local councils and civil society organizations to design inclusive governance strategies. By amplifying citizens’ voices, we aim to ensure that development is not only top-down but community-driven and sustainable.
